Whiskyfish comments: Ways of the fathers my ass, it's entirely a modern phenomena. What you are seeing are pictures of a staged PR event. Anyone notice the "Vaad Harabanim" pushke prominently located on the bima? Wonder why there's a Litvak-looking dude with a red beard standing off to the side of what is ostensibly a Chassidic rebbe making an appearance? Notice how in a couple of the photos this rebbe is holding a sheaf of papers with "Vaad Harabanim" letterhead asking him to pray for their donors? The whole exercise is a staged event for the cameras. Rebbe, Chassidim, Tinokos shel Beis Rabban, and the 'throne' - all are assembled for a photo op in pursuit of the almighty tzedakah dollar. The pictures go in glossy advertising inserts begging for cash and promising "brochos and yeshuos" for those who write the checks. I'd love to know the terms of the deal struck between the "Vaad Harabanim" factotums and the Seret-Vizhnitz fixers as to percentage payouts and whatnot. Figure it's gotta be like a feeding frenzy, everyone trying to get a bigger cut.
