Gershom Sholem on dreaming
I am reading the delightful Lamentations of Youth: The Diaries of Gershom Scholem, 1913-1919. February 26, 1913:
"I took a walk for an hour this evening. I went down Linden Street, where all the cars drove in the direction of the Kaiser. Finally, he showed up with the Danish king. I didn't take off my hat; I had no reason to do so. On my walk I daydreamed once again the entire time. It wouldn't surprise me if I turned out to be a total failure. I dream away in visions of worlds and epochs that either don't exist or are already long past. I wonder what I'll say in twenty years when I read these lines."
