Gershom Sholem on break with Agudah

I am reading the delightful Lamentations of Youth: The Diaries of Gershom Scholem, 1913-1919.

"In January 1914 [Gershom was 17] a youth group of the Agudah was founded, and I was elected to the executive committee. My career in the Agudah ended in May 1914 as a result of my and my friends' resignation. This took place after a meeting of the executive in which Herr Dr. Segal and Dr. Hofmann raised a storm by accusing me of not being true to the Law. Heymann read the declaration of resignation at the general assembly. An unbelievable row broke out, and I incited all sorts of boycotts against me. A month later I left Orthodoxy. It wasn't an easy decision and it caused quite a stir, but I'm now sailing full speed ahead in the direction of Martin Buber. I've also become a socialist.

Later I resigned from the leadership of Young Judah and have withdrawn from the entire business. I'm fed up with organizations. People laugh at me. [. . .]"
