the photos of the Schneerson brothers
On the subject of the photo of the Rebbe standing in Paris in the Jardin du Luxembourg:
If you compare this photo to the photo taken in Berlin at least 5 years earlier, one have to ask about the length of the beard (click to zoom). Yes perhaps it was rolled up, etc. make your own judgment. I say there is nothing to roll at this length. The beard appears the same length in Berlin and during the citizenship ceremony of RAYATZ good 15 years later.
But what about the famous photo with the RAYATZ. The beard there seems even longer, the photo might have been taken in Vienna, certainly preceding the Berlin photo.
Yes, Shimmy Deutsch suggests in his second volume that the beard in the alleged photo with RAYATZ was simply touched up, drawn. But I think the photo has bigger problem than the beard. The man in the photo appears taller than the Rebbe, with longer neck, narrower shoulders. Rebbe also has a distinctly large, round head.
Yisroel Arye Leib's daughter Daliyah Roitman with her mother and R. Maidanchik.
There is a statement in the name of Bere Gourary that the man holding hand of RAYATZ is for sure not his famous uncle but might have been his brother Yisroel Arye leib aka Leibel or Mark Gurary.
Indeed when the photos of Yisroel Arye Leib's daughter Daliyah Roitman came out, she had that striking "Yanovsky look". Really she looks like her father Yisroel Arye Leib. The same elongated egg-like head, long neck, not the iconic round head of her uncle, the redeemer.
Schneur Zalman of NY: Barry Gourary told me several times that the man in the photo was not the Rebbe. He claimed that was not the way the Rebbe looked in those days. Truth be told I argued with Barry about that, but he held his ground. I must concede that Mrs. Dalya Roitman looks like the man in the picture. Are we certain that YAL had no beard in 1927, and we do know the Rayaatz loved him.
