Can we compare the Lubavitcher Rebbe to Stalin?
Pmh comments to mentalblog.com: Report card of the Lubavitcher Rebbe post: Tzemach, I see that you have a recurring interest in comparing people who use power. But I seriously doubt you will glean any insight by comparing the Rebbe to a psychopathic bully. It not just bad taste but it doesn't contribute to understanding. And certainly does not show us a way forward from our current impasse.
Dear Pmh, this is about the subject not the object. One of the reasons I was so fascinated with Dr. Carl Jung and his theories was the discovery in my youth that love is an internal personal mechanism. I.e. the fact that A loves B tells us about As capacity for love and at the same time tells us very little about the qualities possessed by B (hence "falling" in love as if unexpectedly beyond reason). Jung explained this through the Archetypes. For example in case of love to a woman an internal archetype he called Anima is activated and projected onto la femme fatal who is only but a faint mortal reflection of the immeasurable primordial forces.
So similarity the fact that we have seen cults of personalities thought the history tells us about the human need for the Archetypal King, conversely it tells us very little about the subject adored by the crowds. In the 20th century this worshiping of personalities was taken up few notches because of the incredible brainwashing power of the mass media, particularly when coupled with censorship. And of course in the fairy tales there are bad and good witches but they all ride the same brooms on occasion.
So here we encounter the following logic: "all other Admorim (possibly even those of the earlier generations) never had such dedicated Chasidim, who loved their Rebbe even more than a father & would do anything that he requests?"
My answer is that this tells us about the human capacity for the adulation under the influence of the intense propaganda and it tells us almost nothing about who was the Rebbe.
Of course "we still must find the way forward" but you have to take into consideration several generations of Jews who grew up in the darkness of disinformation and the cult of personality promulgated with the Rebbe's encouragement. The Lubavitcher Rebbe was one in a long list of the rulers who employed this mechanism particularity in the horrible 20th century. So the fact that there are thousands who are ready to sacrifice life for him tells the objective observer nothing about the Rebbe and in fact allows us to compare the Lubavitcher Rebbe Rabbi Menachem Mendel Schneerson Zecher Tzadik LeVrocho to the Generalissimo Joseph Stalin Yimach Shmo.
