Analyzing Shechita at Rubashkins
As expected there were conversations about this on Shabbos. Some said that they do not care whats in the video because of the leftist terrorist bustards at PETA; others said that Lubavitcher Shechita is the most careful and kosher process in the world. I am afraid people who hold these opinions cant be part of any rational discussion.
A Doctor in our Shule told me that in principal cows anatomy is similar to humans. Even when arteries are severed there could still be a blood supply to the brain after Schehita. There are additional arteries on the back on the neck that carry blood to brain. So it would not be unusual that depending on the nature of the wound for the heart and brain to function for several minutes. In other words Shechita is not death.
This was immediately confirmed by a Rav who was listening to the conversation, he happens to be the biggest Posek in Boston. He pointed to us a Gemora Gittin (page 70 b). It talks about an incident of a person being shechted. The person was conscious enough even after "Schehita" to gesture to people around him that they should write a get to his wife (so his wife doesnt have to remarry his brother as prescribed by the laws of Chaliza). One the same page of Gemora, a person literally walking away and getting lost after "his two neck pipes were severed". This would mean that his death is not confirmed and the killer does not have to escape to the Arey Miklat (towns of refuge). What it all illustrates is that death and Shechita are two separate events. And therefore it would not be unusual for a cow to stagger But the incident in the video, where the cow walked away might be indicative of the arteries not being properly severed.
I am not sure I understood the Rav correctly in regards to the question of ever min hachay with removed trachea, but he definitely said the the animal "feels it".
